True Love sometimes requires a little lying is an exhibition that considers how artists master techniques of truth and fantasy in their practices. Inherent to the act of creative production are the twinned decisions of what to conceal and make plain, the strategies of obfuscation and revelation that determine a composition in its form and codes. This is as true in the sense of an artist working within and pushing against the relatively limited frame of a canvas or sheet of paper as it is in the narrative decisions they make as storytellers and world builders.
In True Love, fifteen artists consider such formal tactics and subject negotiations, exploring themes of self- hood, sex, bodies, icons, and personal and cultural histories through strategies of abstraction and transformation. Within self-established parameters the artists choose what parts of themselves or others to include and omit, constructing alternate timelines, lost futures, and surreal encounters. True Love is interested in the artist’s power to create, control, seduce, and perhaps even deceive, to establish a legible truth.
It may be a lie, but it may be love too.
